The 2006 eBay Live conference in Las Vegas is the 5th annual event.

15,000 people signed up for the event, and for the first time it sold out. It sold out more than 2 weeks prior to the opening day ceremonies.

People from all 50 states are at the conference and 35 foreign countries are represented including Malta, Estonia and Thailand.

1.3 million eBay users make their primary income from selling on eBay

The average age of the eBay user is 55

Last Saturday the 200th million eBay user registered. If eBay were a country, it would now be the fifth largest country in the world based on population.

There are 720 eBay, PayPal and Skype employees working the convention (eBay owns PayPal and Skype)

Thanks to eBay users using the eBay Giving Works charitable donation link when selling certain items, eBay members donated $20 million to charities in the last year, much of it going to Katrina relief.

In the last year eBay hired 400 customer support representatives in an effort to boost its customer support (both phone and live chat help)

According to Bill Cobb, President of eBay North America, “Collectibles are the heart and soul of eBay.”

The no. 1 reason people do not complete an eBay transaction is due to higher than anticipated shipping costs quoted by the seller. 54 percent of people surveyed said the shipping cost was the most important thing they considered when making a purchase. In the next few months eBay will begin cracking down hard on sellers who gouge on shipping costs.

EBay buys 15 million keywords for search engines.

How do you determine if someone is gouging on shipping costs? I would think some people would up the cost to account for packing material, as well as a little extra for their time preparing it, not to mention any gas burned off driving to and from the post office. Seems like it would be hard to determine who is gouging and who is adding in real costs.

What eBay is looking at are the listings that start at 99 cents and then add $49.95 for shipping on an item that would actually cost $3.50 to ship. It is kind of a big problem. Connie

I am a fan of Ebay, most of the time. But their claim to registered members does not include the term "active." It appears once a registered member, always one, even when user has not had any transactions for a long period of time. I am not even sure how someone would define "active" as it pertains to Ebay users...but feel very confident their huge numbers reported are inflated.
