Like A Rolling Stone

Rolling Stone magazine recently celebrated 1,000 issues with a splashy Sgt. Pepper-inspired cover. This prompted me to look on eBay and see what past issues have been commanding among rock ‘n’ roll memorabilia collectors.

Among the more interesting offerings, a dealer in Sacramento, Calif., was offering a bound volume of the first 15 issues of the magazine (Nov. 9, 1967-Aug. 10, 1968) for $444.44. After 7 bids, the bound volume was up to $810 with a little more than a day left in the listing. The same seller had numerous other issues in bound volumes for sale, with prices ranging from $275-300.

The infamous Jan. 22, 1981, cover featuring a nude John Lennon cuddling with Yoko Ono (the issue was devoted to Lennon’s death and in fact, the photo was taken the eve before his death) started at $30 and was up to $41 7 bids later, with three days left.

The Oct. 15, 1970, Jimi Hendrix memorial issue started at $10 and had climbed to $31 after 8 bids, with two days left. It seems the special commemorative/memorial issues are highly collectible.

What does everyone think about the special 1,000th commemorative issue and are any of you vintage Rolling Stone magazine collectors or sellers?

I've had a subscription to R.S. for at least ten years, I admit that I have kept a couple of the memorials but the rest go into the trash. I'm not really that hard up for the cash that I would save a magazine for twenty years so that I could turn a thirty dollar profit. As far as impressing people with my 1978 issue of Billy Joel, I would probably receive an insincere WOW!

I never realized that they made so many Rolling Stone magazines. I thought maybe a hundred! Although, they do come out with new issues a lot it seems like :

Its a cool looking cover, although I probably wouldn't recognize half the people on it.

LOL...now why wouldn't that surprise me?

Maybe I'm crazy, but to the person who said all they'd receive is an insincere wow to their Billy Joel cover, I'd be sincere about wanting to look through it ... but I love vintage entertainment probably more than the average person.

I tried to name all the people I could, but it got confusing. I suddenly realized that since there were so many people I kept repeating myself. Lol :)

That's a cool cover. I like Kenny from South Park tucked there in the back.

Ironic that a writer likes a character who only has a one word vocabulary.

They should make a contest. It would be like the game, "How many jellybeans are in this jar?". You would either make an estimate of how many people are there, or just count. Then they could give you some dumb prize such as making the next issue free. lol.
