DALTON, Minn. — All things Western will be drawing bidders to a May 25 auction conducted at the Dalton Community Center by Aasness Auctioneers. The firm will be selling the personal property of Archie Miller who died at the age of 101. The firm sold the contents of Miller’s museum in 2006 and auction owner Cary Aasness said that auction was a huge success. “Archie loved the old West and much of the artwork in this auction originated from, and was authenticated by, the Ace Powell Art Galleries of Kalispell, Mont.,” Aasness said. Highlighting the auction will be a group of Western-themed cast bronzes, including several by Alexander Proctor (1860-1950). Proctor is well known for his realistic Western bronzes. While born in Canada, he grew up in Colorado before moving east to pursue a career as an artist. His work drew considerable attention when he exhibited at the World’s Columbian Exposition in Chicago. “Proctor’s genius in depicting animals can be seen in the Tigers in front of Princeton University’s Nassau Hall,” according to the Alexander Phimister Proctor Foundation website. “The Animal House in New York’s Zoological Gardens carries his monkeys, elephants, rhinoceros and frogs on its frieze. Lions flank Pittsburgh’s Frick Building, and four Buffalo guard the Q Street Bridge in Washington, D.C. His last monumental commission, Mustangs, which resides on the campus of the University of Texas at Austin, is a sublime symbol of freedom and self-reliance a fitting finale to a spectacular career.” The Aasness auction will feature at least six Proctor bronzes. One of the highlights will be Equestrian Warrior, measuring 40 by 29 inches. The original of this bronze was submitted to the 1900 Pairs Exposition where it won a gold model. Numerous other bronzes as well as Western-themed paintings and sculptures will also be featured. No Western auction would be complete without firearms and this sale also features a long list of those as well. Both live and online bidding will be available for this auction.
