By William Flood

CHEVY CHASE, Md. — Metro DC-based Sloans & Kenyon Auctioneers and Appraisers held a December catalog auction featuring 274 lots of high-end Asian art and antiques, fine and decorative art, antique furniture, estate jewelry, and assorted fine collectibles. Multiple items achieved five-figure winning bids while dozens more landed four-figure prices.

Among the five-figure sales was $31,000 paid for a custom-made platinum and 18K yellow gold and diamond engagement-type ring with an emerald-cut 2.68 ct. diamond centered by two trapezoid-cut diamonds together weighing 0.68 ct.

An oil on canvas painting by Pakistani artist Sadequain (1930-1987) of two figures noted as “painted in Paris” sold for $16,000. It was part of a collection that the artist left behind in Paris in 1967 before traveling to Pakistan. A signed 25-inch bronze figure, Girl with Umbrella by Puerto Rican artist Angel Botello (1913-1986) reached $18,000. Fine furniture sold well and included a rare Irish Queen Anne triple-chair-back walnut settee, circa 1730-1740, from County Kildare in Ireland which sold for $4,000. It featured elaborately carved shell-and-pendant lambrequin, hooped arm supports with carved bird’s heads, and cabriole legs with paw feet. A George III mahogany dining table with a triple-pedestal base and rectangular top sold for $4,750. The table featured molded edges and rounded corners, turned supports and two leaves providing for 164 inches of dining when fully extended.

Asian arts included a Chinese black lacquer and gilt jewelry chest, circa 19th-century, from a private collection in Maryland, selling for $345. A Chinese blue and white porcelain bowl with lotus decoration and Guanxu six-character mark sold for $1,700. Another porcelain piece, a 19th-century Chinese peach bloom glazed porcelain vase, with Kangxi six-character mark snagged $450.

From other parts of the world, a Victorian-era silver-mounted Cassowary bird egg sewing box from Australia, with provenance indicating that the piece descended through the family of Theodore Roosevelt, went for $2,300. A late 19th-century French floral-and-bird marquetry rosewood cylinder music box sold for $1,700. A George III-style sterling silver six-part epergne trimmed with serpentine outlines and relief-scroll decoration grabbed $2,700 - nearly three-times prebid estimates.

Back in the fine art category, selling for $5,000, was a Great Lakes marine disaster oil on canvas, circa 1865 by American painter William Ruthven Wheeler (1832-1894). An Angel Botello painting of a female nude, oil on board, sold for $4,000.

A set of four Minton hand-painted cabinet plates with polychrome flowering baskets, gilt scrolling, and three patè-sur-patè classical heads, originally retailed by Tiffany and Company went for $1,500; and, an Art Deco platinum diamond and ruby ring with a transitional modern cut round 0.75 ct. diamond centered by 42 smaller round diamonds and 12 caliber-cut rubies sold for $1,000.
